Eligible Lebanese Nationals May Apply for TPS and Employment Authorization Documents


The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has designated Lebanon for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for 18 months, beginning November 27, 2024. This announcement, made by Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas, provides Lebanese nationals residing in the United States with an important opportunity to secure legal protections and work authorization.


Key Details About TPS for Lebanese Nationals


  • Eligibility Requirements:

    • Must have continuously resided in the U.S. since October 16, 2024.

    • Must have been continuously physically present in the U.S. since November 27, 2024.

  • Application Period:

    • The initial registration period runs from November 27, 2024, through May 27, 2026.

  • How to Apply:

    • Eligible individuals must submit Form I-821 (Application for Temporary Protected Status). Applicants may also apply for an Employment Authorization Document (EAD) by submitting Form I-765 (Application for Employment Authorization) either concurrently with their TPS application or at a later time.


Special Student Relief for Lebanese F-1 Students

F-1 students from Lebanon may benefit from Special Student Relief (SSR), allowing:

  • Authorization to work additional hours while school is in session.

  • The option to reduce their course load while maintaining valid F-1 status.


Deferred Enforced Departure (DED)

Additionally, procedures are now in place for Lebanese nationals covered under President Biden’s July 26, 2024, grant of Deferred Enforced Departure (DED). Eligible individuals may apply for EADs valid through January 25, 2026.
