What is Naturalization?

Naturalization is the legal process through which a lawful permanent resident (green card holder) becomes a U.S. citizen. This process involves meeting eligibility requirements, submitting the appropriate forms, passing an interview and tests, and taking the Oath of Allegiance to the United States.

Benefits of U.S. Citizenship

Becoming a U.S. citizen provides many benefits, including:

  • The right to vote in federal elections.

  • Access to a U.S. passport for international travel.

  • The ability to petition for certain family members to immigrate to the U.S.

  • Protection from deportation.

  • Greater access to government benefits and employment opportunities.

Eligibility Requirements for Naturalization

According to the USCIS Policy Manual, to be eligible for naturalization, you must generally meet the following criteria:

  1. Age Requirement: Be at least 18 years old.

  2. Lawful Permanent Residency: Hold a green card for at least 5 years (or 3 years if married to a U.S. citizen).

  3. Continuous Residence: Live continuously in the U.S. for the required period.

  4. Physical Presence: Be physically present in the U.S. for at least half of the required residency period.

  5. Good Moral Character: Demonstrate good moral character during the statutory period.

  6. English and Civics Knowledge: Be able to read, write, and speak basic English and have knowledge of U.S. history and government (with some exceptions for age or disability).

  7. Oath of Allegiance: Be willing to support and defend the U.S. Constitution and take the Oath of Allegiance.
